Kampala — THE Government has received sh9.2b from the Global Fund for the emergency procurement of anti-retroviral drugs to address the current shortage for the next three months.
The minister of information and national guidance, Kabakumba Masiko and Dr. Zainab Akol, who heads the AIDS Control Programme (ACP), on Thursday addressed the media on the situation of ARV availability in the country.
Kabakumba said ARV stocks were low because of a high transmission rate, while some types of ARVs had been discontinued due to their side effects.
Also, the shortage of ARVs is due to the increase in voluntary counselling and testing she added. She said more people know their HIV status and are seeking treatment.
ARV provision in Uganda is funded by the US-government's Presidential Emergency Programme For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Global Fund and the government.
According to the ministry of health, 1.3 million Ugandans have HIV. Out of these, 350,000 are eligible for ARVs because their CD4 count is below 250 cells/mm. However, only 180,000 (about 40%) are on treatment
